What is it?
The VBOX Precision Ranging System (VPRS) dynamically measures the distance between two objects in real-time with an update rate of up to 100 times a second and an accuracy of ±2 cm, in any environment. It is suitable for any application where you need to calculate a real-time separation distance between static or dynamic objects and does not rely on GPS, which means the system is not affected by interference from atmospheric conditions or signal reflections and can also be used indoors.
What are the applications?
Designed by in-house Racelogic engineers, bespoke adaptations are available to meet customer needs, placing no limits on the potential applications of this innovative technology.
We are already in discussions with a variety of construction partners to implement VPRS and it is currently in operation in a major construction project in San Francisco. Operating in a complex urban environment with highly restricted GPS signal access, VPRS is delivering accurate measurement of foundation pile drilling depth in a situation where traditional measurement technologies are unable to operate.
How does VPRS work?
VPRS consists of a receiver (rover) and a beacon, which communicate using Ultra-Wideband (UWB). The rover is placed on one of the objects, the beacon is placed on the second object and the distance between each is then calculated by the rover to an accuracy of up to two centimetres.
There is no need to survey the position of either device, install any site control system or perform complex setup routines. Up to 5 system pairs can be used simultaneously and are easily configured using the free VPRS setup software.

- Resolution: 1mm
- Range:> 100m
- IP Rating: IP 67
- Operating temperature: -30°C to +60°C
- Size (of each beacon): 124mm diameter, 74.5mm height
- Weight (of each beacon): 350g
- Power requirements: 6.5 - 30 V DC, 100mA
- Communication with data logger (rover): RS232 / CAN
How do we get such high accuracy?
We have built our own custom hardware, software and calibration routines which has resulted in an industry leading accuracy of ±2cm. Having a variable update rate (up to 100 Hz) and low latency makes the system ideal for static or dynamic applications and we also temperature calibrate the beacons, to ensure accuracy in all conditions.
How do I access the data?
The data can be viewed live on a Racelogic VBOX Touch and points can be saved to an SD card. The position and speed are also output over an RS232 link or onto a CAN bus, allowing easy connection to third party equipment.
